How To Play 5 Families: The Definitive Guide

This guide is for players of the board game 5 Families. In this game, players are each head of a criminal family, and must try to amass the most wealth and power through various means. The game can be played with 2-5 players, and typically lasts around 60-90 minutes.

The Objective

The goal of the game is to become the most powerful crime family in the city. This is done by gaining control of different areas of the city, as well as amassing wealth and influence. The player who can do this best will be crowned the winner.

Setup

To set up the game, first place the board in the middle of the playing area. Then, place the 5 colored family markers on spaces A1, B2, C3, D4, and E5 on the board. Finally, shuffle the deck of cards and place it face down next to the board.

Each player then selects a color and takes all of the pieces of that color. Players begin play with $10,000 in cash, which they should place in front of them on the playing area. The youngest player goes first, and play passes clockwise around the table from there.

How To Play

On a player's turn, they will draw one card from the deck and then play one. The cards are broken down into 4 main types: Action Cards, Area Cards, Influence Cards, and Wealth Cards. In order to win the game, a player must amass 3 points worth of Wealth Cards (indicated by a dollar symbol on each card). They can also gain victory by controlling 3 different Areas or through surpassing another player in Influence Points. We will go over each type of card in more detail below:

Action Cards: These cards are used to perform various actions during the game. They can be used for things such as moving your piece around the board or taking money from another player. Some Action Cards also have special effects that can be beneficial or harmful to players based on what's drawn.

Area Cards: There are 9 different Area Cards in total which are placed in specific spots on the board at the beginning of the game. These cards represent different parts of town (e.g., Downtown, Residential Districts, etc.). Each Area has its own unique properties which players can take advantage of depending on their strategy. For example, some Areas give players bonuses for owning multiple businesses there while others may have police stations which make it harder for other players to operate openly without getting caught.

## Influence Cards: As mentioned earlier, Influence Points are used to determine who is winning the game. Players will gain Influence Points by completing tasks on Area or Action Cards (such as robbing a bank) or by defeating other players in direct combat (more on this later). The player with most Influence Points at any given point is considered to be winning at that moment however ties are possible if two or more players have equal points at any time during the game).

## Wealth Cards: As mentioned before, Wealth Cards are worth 1 point each towards winning the game. There are 3 different types of Wealth Card (1x1$, 2x5$, 3x10$), and a player must have at least one card of each type to win outright (they do not need to have them all together). As such, it is advantageous for players to try and gather as many Wealth Cards as possible during gameplay.
